Yesterday we broke down and did it, we joined Hoover Sailing Club. We are now official yachties living the bougie yachtie lifestyle. Just to give you an idea of how exclusive this membership is, at <$500 per year, only Columbus' most elite plutocrats can join. Part of my club membership responsibilities included working the the open-house which took place today. Activities varied from free sail-boat rides, to booths on the physics of sailing, and a free lunch. Attendees varied from several minivans full of assisted living seniors to several minivans of full of kindergarteners. On the whole it was a very successful event.
To boost my future Walmart cred, I worked as the greeter. This gave me an opportunity to meet many of the my new fellow-club members.
The end of the day finished with a big burger cookout with views of the setting sun over the lake and a keg of beer. However, this is a yacht club and as such there were also two boxes of the finest vacuum packaged wine, available for our more refined club members.
Just as I was getting ready to head home I received the following text from Susan Li: "Guess what I'm doing" followed by a picture of sail boat. "Nice," I replied, "I'm actually pretty close to your position." We decided that I should jump on board for a little sail, however, a low hanging bridge separated their boat from the docks at the club. We decided to perform a daring pick-up where their fixed keel boat would sail precariously close to the rocky edge of the approach embankment. Then I would jump across the distance hopefully grabbing onto the life-lines and pulling myself onboard. After setting up for the run, their boat excellently positioned itself within three feet of the embankment and I threw my shoes and socks onboard followed by a daring leap. I gabbed the lifeline and pulled myself on-board, but not before my left leg suffered a brief submersion. I think we were all in disbelief that our improbable pickup worked, We then had a fully enjoyable evening sail back to the south end docks.
